Book Report: "Open Sources" "Voices from the Open Source Revolution" edited by: Chris DiBona, Sam Ockman & Mark Stone a compilation of articles from some of the leaders of the current "Open Source" community (people such as: Paule Vixie(BIND), Larry Wall(Perl), Bob Young(RedHat), Linus Torvalds(Linux), Tim O'Reily (O'Reilly books), Richard Stallman(GNU), Michael Tiemann(Cygnus), Brian Behlendorf(Apache), Scott Bradner(IETF), Jim Hamerly(Netscape) copyright: 1999 ISBN: 1-56592-582-3 Price: $24.95 (US) published by: O'Reilly 261 pages ================================================================================ There isn't much that I can say here about subject matter other than to say if you are at all interested in the "Open Source" movement (including GNU & Linux & Apache), then you should be reading this book, and both understading as well as 'buying-into' the strategies & philosophies in this book. I was fairly well 'up' on the movement, I've used Gnu Tools for years and Linux for the better part of 2 1/2 years now, so I felt I was pretty well tuned in. However, there's a lot more to the open-source-movement than meets the eye, and the articles by the people from Netscape, Apache & others were really impressive in their depth & coverage of things that I wasn't all that up-to- speed on. Please try to get yourself a copy, and remember we owe the success of the GSD Operation to the Gnu Tools - especially their compiler. We should be supporting Gnu specifically, and the Open Source movement in general, as we certainly take advantage of their activies. bill (27 November 1999)...
