Computer Software Applications
How to get your daily-work-done with the help of a computer
Many Many people use computers in their daily
lives - either at home and./or at work. Even people who never
touch a computer use them , without knowing.
Every single task or activity that a computer does on behalf of someone
requires a piece of "application software". . We named a number
of different types of computer software in the previous web-page - lets look
at those items, and then expand the list, further:
- Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc.)
- E-mail client software tools (Netscape Messenger, Microsoft
Outlook, Eudora, Pine, Q-mail
- Quicken 20xx - accounting softwae
- Oracle, Sybase, FileMaker Pro, Access - database
- Netscape communicator / Internet Explorer / OmniWeb / Lynx - internet
web browsers
- AutoCAD, VectorWorks, MacCAD, Mentor Graphics, Cadence, Rhino - CAD
tools
- Photo-Shop - photographic re-touching & manipulation software
We can carry this list on longer than I want to type and longer than
you want to read but - in most cases, application software breaks-down-into
these categories:
- Business
- Accounting
- Finance
- Industry-specific-office: (Law, Dental, Manufacturing, Accounting,
Consulting, etc.)
- Inventory Management
- Order taking, processing, shipping, inventory updating
- Scheduling (as in truck / train / plane deliveries)
- Government (tax, (employee, sales, etc.) reporting
- Government (as in import-export reporting / forms manipulation
- Personal-productivity
- Personal Digital Assistants
- Finance - tax-return-preparation
- Educational - research - term-papers - school notes
- Entertainment
- Movies
- Games
- Travel-related
- Utility
- Anti-Virus
- Backup
- Vulnerability testing
- Hacking-preventin
- g
- Network
- E-mail
- InterNet / World Wide Web Browsing
- FTP (moving files around on the network)
- Network health & performance monitoring & management
- Banking-transaction software
and - of course there's always some-other kind.
However, - suffice it to say that, in most cases, a piece of application
software should
- serve a need - which using it can fulfill for you
- support expansion - of data-file size, complexity, functionality
- do it's job well - without failure of the software or corruption of
your files
- be a productive extension of your business or personal life
IF it is not - then it it time to investigate the investment in the software,
and your time to learn to use & support it.
