VikingAsia Consulting
helping you recover more value from your network
investment
Who we are:
Bill Schell and associates are
(mostly) Motorolans & ex-Motorolans who spent most of their
professional lives designing, specifying, purchasing, installing,
configuring and operating high-performance, high-availability TCP/IP
based networks for engineering computing environments (like IC design
and Software Development), in Asia, Europe and Americas.
We specialize in both designing and building new
implementations, as well as 'tuning-up' your existing LAN/WAN
environment to get more from less (more productivity from existing
equipment & network architectures).
What we do: There are typically three areas where we find we can
help you and or your business:
Training: on-site and/or web-based (CBT) on a variety of
subjects - professionally presented in person or purchased 'package'
training ensembles
- network infrastructure - we teach basics
through advanced concepts; we also teach the academic approach
through real-world-practices of network design and operation
- security - train you and your staff in the
concepts and practices to protect your company's information
- audit - an approach that emphasizes people
more than technology
- documentation (hard-copy and electronic
form); here is a 'brief' treatise on "Documentation
Done Right"
Audit: information security and intellectual property
protection audits, training, preparedness and self-audit processes,
procedures, tools, techniques, philosophies & logic.
- policy development
- where none exists, create one
and embed the model in your employees
- standards
development - create, buy, beg, borrow
and manipulate
- evaluate
compliance with standards - how "close"
is your organization to the standards you have set for it
- gap-analysis
- where are the dis-connects and how
to eliminate them with a concentration on people, policy and
technology
Network Design: develop design and implementation plans
for
Local, Metropolitan and Wide Area Networks.
All networks should be designed, implemented and
supported to achieve:
- security - does the network enhance the
segregation, maintenance and backup of data
- productivity - does the network
architecture
'add value' to the computer-user or is it an impediment to the business?
- scalability - will the network architecture
'grow painlessly' (time and dollars) with the growth of the business as
well as the growth of technology-platform change(s)
- economy - does this network meet the
business need(s) at a fair price?
Our 'Signature Activity' - something we call the "ANAR" - which means
"Annual Network Architecture Review" - a regular, rigourous review of
your computer(s) and the network-architecture that connects them
together, to answer the one
single-basic-question:
IS my computer network architecture valid for my business-model
today, and will it be so in the future (weeks / months / years)?
We do not sell hardware, (either computers or
networking equipment) nor software. Basically we don' t have an
'axe to
grind' in our recommendations to you or your organization.
What we do, more than anything, is to give
you the benefit of our background, experience, training and wisdom,
and then let you make a more informed decision about your
computer(s) and networking environment.
How we
work and how we charge:
Our 'normal' work-day is from 09:00 until 16:00, which we bill as an
8 hour day - some of that 8th hour is travel-time and some of it is
documentation preparation time. We normally eat lunch on-the-fly.
We normally drive to the work-site if it is within the south-Florida
area (south of a line between Jacksonville to Cedar Key). If we
drive to your site (if it is within the south-Florida area) then our
travel-costs are covered within the 'first' rates items listed below.
If we are required to stay over-night, then hotels and meals,
air-travel and other such incidentals
are charged at cost plus 12%, in addition to our labor rates, quoted
below.
Less than one day's work (10 hours work plus travel or less) we charge
by the hour, and
only a phone-call is required to initiate a job. Additionally; for
casual / less than a day's work - payment is required at the time the
work is complete via either cash and/or US$ check, unless prior
arrangements have been made.
rates: 1st hour: $165 - each additional hour - $125
More than a one-day-job; we require a signed / verified 'work request
agreement', which is a one-page contract, that we can send to you, via
e-mail, upon request.
rates: 1st day $1,200;
each additional day - $1,000
work accomplished includes, at no additional cost (but prepared &
transmitted on billable time):
- a brief summary of work
accomplished
- a brief summary of
suggested further activities
- a brief list of items for
'request for quotation' if further
activities include purchasing new items
